This proposal follows from a previous grant the ultimate objective of both projects being the development of a new process for removal of SO2 (and NOx) from flue gases. Electrochemically (re-) generated aqueous reductants such as Ti3+, Cr2+ or V2+ ions are reacted with aqueous absorbed SO2 to give a solid sulphur product, in principle with no on-going reagent requirement and producing no effluent. In addition, NOx may be reduced simultaneously to nitrogen or ammonium ions. This will be a considerable advance on currently available processes, provided it can be achieved with an acceptable specific energy requirement/running costs and capital costs.
