Summary on Grant Application Form
Fast flame speed and high rates of pressure in the first 10% of the explosion in large L/D enclosures have been identified by the applicant and these are very sensitive to the presence of obstacles. This poses severe venting problems and there is very little experimental data on which current venting design predictions are based and this work will extend current design data. Large L/D enclosures such as bucket conveyors, distillation columns and conveyor ovens often have obstacles to the explosion which cause flame acceleration. There has been no experimental investigation relevant to this situation with venting and this will be undertaken in the present work.
