A proposal is made for a 3 year programme to study the effect of compressibility on transition to turbulence in a round jet. The study will build on previous experience with the direct numerical simulation of compressible flows. A significant part of the work will involve the development of new methods to overcome numerical difficulties in simulating the highly nonlinear states of transition. New simulation codes which solve the full Navier-Stokes equations will be developed and tested. They will then be used to study the effect of mach number on transition in a round jet. In particular the relative importance of axisymmetric and helical modes of instability, and the effect that these have on entrainment and mixing, will be analysed. The computer codes will also be useful for future studies of compressible boundary-layer transition, aerodynamic sound generation, and supersonic combustion.
