To investigate equaliser architectures specifically designed to deal with the problem of communications channels which suffer from highs degrees of random time variation.Progress:An extensive investigation. has been carried out into the performance of standard linear adaptive algorithms operating in the time variant environment. As expected this has shown that no improvement in performance is obtained by using complex recursive least squares algorithms. This was then extended to the case of using predictive structures which have been successful in channel identification. However, this proves to be not effective in the equaliser case due to the highly nonlinear nature of the coefficient dynamics.The project then focused on the use of non-linear architectures which are designed to exploit implicit information in the channel output signal amplitude which is strongly related to the time variant model. A multidimensional non-linear equaliser structure has been developed which consistently outperforms any linear equivalent in terms of bit error rate, and is independent of the assumed model of the channel time variation.A number of conference papers have been published on this material and two journal papers are currently in preparation.
