Summary on Grant Application Form
To prepare, by the reactions of solutions of transition metal carbonyls in high boiling point organic solvents with sulphur or selenium, compounds of the type MYn[where n is greater than or equal to 3]. To establish if the preparative routes are reproducible and to characterise the compounds using a variety of techniques such as Infra-red and Fourier-Transform Raman Spectroscopy, Analytical Electron Microscopy, X-ray Powder Diffraction, Magnetic Susceptibility, Conductivity Measurements, Thermal Gravimetric Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry. To assess the potential uses of the sulphides and selenides as possible battery cathodes in secondary cells. The results of c will determine which materials are worthy of further study and the path of subsequent work. Further sulphides and selenides and more complex materials will be synthesised with the aim of optimising the performance of the battery cathodes. Mixed sulphide/selenides or mixed compounds of the type MYnXm[Y=S or Se; X=P or As] would be candidate materials at this stage of the project.
