To assess the applicability of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) to future personal communications systems, in particular the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), through:Theoretical analyses and simulations of networks and radio links.Design and construction of a demonstration system.Field trials of the test-bed system.Progress:Completed:Analysis of service and air-interface requirements for UMTS.Analysis of Spectral Efficiency for frequency hopping (FH) and direct sequence (DS) CDMA.Analysis of hardware complexity for both FH and DS CDMA systems.Specification of architecture for a DS CDMA system, including the following features:1. Forward and reverse links at 64 and 128 kb/s with coding and interleaving2. Reverse link closed loop power control3. Macro diversity on both links4. Code separated power control and signalling channelsDesign of test set for field trial of test-bed system.In Progress:Physical design and manufacture of demonstration system. Current position at Bradford:1. A new architecture for an all-digital coherent rake receiver has been developed 2. Analogue and RF modules for the test-bed system have been designed and manufactured. 3. DSP modules for a mobile station modulator and a base station demodulator (including rake receiver) designed and currently being tested and de-bugged.
