This project has developed a silicon optoelectronic hybrid interconnect (SOPHI) technology within a systems context. The work has been directed towards producing a sub-system module (eg. an optical fibre transceiver module for fibreto-the-home applications) that combines a number of optical and high speed electronic functions in a single package. This demonstrator incorporates existing components, so that the programme can concentrate on the interconnect, assembly and packaging technologies. The main components are (i) semiconductor laser (ii)lithium niobate modulator (iii) photodetectors and (iv) wavelength division multiplexing. Progress:The programme end date has been extended and staggered for the various partners, to allow for equipment downtime and resource difficulties to be accommodate. Consequently the last stages of the programme will be completed by 30 June 1995. During the initial stages of the programme the demonstrator design has been divided into two separate modules, both exploiting and proving the interconnect technology of SOPHI. One of the modules includes all aspects of the initial demonstrator except for external modulation of the laser by the lithium niobate module. Instead the laser is directly modulated through its power supply. The second demonstrator will exclude the laser interconnection, but will provide an external fibre-coupled laser; all other aspects of the initial demonstrator being preserved. A significant number of the milestone objectives have been successfully completed and the routes to completing the final demonstrator modules have been established. Although a number of crucial milestones remain outstanding at this stage it is expected that the completed modules will satisfy the original objectives of this programme by demonstrating the SOPHI interconnect technology.
