Flocculated structures, commonly known as flocs, can be formed in many ways, for example, by addition to electrolytes, surfactants or polymers, by high shear, by flow through pipes, ejection from orifices or by blowing air or gases through a particulate dispersion (surface flocculation). Flocs can either be formed adventitiously or deliberately. In the latter case this may be as a precursor to filtration or to another separation process, eg in water purification or sewage treatment to remove material; in other cases to obtain a powder in granular form which can then be used for fabrication, eg moulding. The nature of the flocs is important in the sense they need to have a high green strength for filtration, whereas if they are to be redispersed to form a stable dispersion such as a paint, they need to be redispersible.Although studies have been made of floc size, floc porosity, floc strength etc., there appear to have been very few studies of the formation of flocs in situ with the aim of studying the structure of flocs formed under varying sets of conditions.
