Summary on Grant Application Form
Luminescent sensors will be developed for monitoring H+ initially and later for Na+,K+,Ca2+ and organic cations such as H3N+(CH2)4NH3+ and H3N+(CH2)3CO2- in naturally fluorescent environments with organic molecular phosphorescence and - emission of lanthanide ion complexes as the sensory variables. The second, and parallel, programme will develop fluorescent sensors for the above ions with an inbuilt self-calibration (using energy transfer and twisted internal charge transfer phenomena) to allow their use in microenvironments with undefined/variable conditions. Both programmes begin with our sensor design logic based on photoinduced electron transfer (PET), followed by synthesis and evaluation in chemical and biomimetic media.
