Summary on Grant Application Form
The objectives of the research programme are firstly to provide a fundamental theoretical basis for the use of neural network methodologies as a flexible modelling tool, and secondly to investigate their application to a number of demonstration processes. The demonstrator projects will be selected so as to facilitate adoption of the techniques developed by the industrial and scientific communities in the solution of problems which require a pattern classification approach. Technology transfer will be supported by an International Neural Networks Club between Newcastle and the University of Maryland, USA, which already has over 30 industrial members. Typical areas of interest are sensor data interpretation, non-invasive sensing, model based process control and optimisation, and complex data analysis normally tackled by PCA and PLS methods.
