The proposed research will investigate, via both experimental and theoretical studies, three key areas of adhesive joint research. Firstly, the questions of how and why the adherend material influences the measured toughness of an adhesive joint during purely cohesive failure in the adhesive will be adressed.Secondly, the very important question of how cracks propagate through modern structural adhesives will be addressed. The micromechanisms occurring in the vicinity of the crack tip will be determind under mode I, opening tensile loading.Thirdly, the role of friction during mode II, in plane shear loading, will be assessed. The mode II studies will be extended to determine the micro mechanics of crack growth occurring under mode II loading.Finite element analysis modelling will be used to validate and quantify the relationships formulated and these will be used to develop new failure criteria for adhesive joints. This project will also contribute directly, through International collaboration with European Structural Integrity Society, to the formation of new International standards for the testing of adhesive joints.
