There has been increasing emphasis placed on improving safety and reducing injuries due to transportation, industrial and recreational accidents in recent years. Safety optimisation calls for a detailed knowledge of human tolerance limits to transient forces and accelerations. However engineers still lack the ability to model injury mechanisms and human tolerance to impacts in the quantitative detail required for design calculations. Analytical, numerical and experimental techniques which have proved very successful in the study of more traditional engineering structures will be used to study both the load bearing behaviour and the dynamic response to impact to the human body. The proposed research will focus on increasing our understanding of injury mechanisms, increasing our ability to model injuries and our ability to develop novel injury mitigating enviroments. Experimentally validated numerical models of the body will provide designers with an invaluable tool for exploring the mechanical behaviour of orthopaedic prosthetic devices and offer the prospect of a more systematic and efficient approach to optimising protective systems. The proposed research programme clearly meets the extending the quality of life (EQUAL) objective of the Technology Foresight Programme.
