Summary on Grant Application Form
The following proposal for a five-year advanced fellowship is focused in an area of materials and corrosion engineering relating to advanced ceramic-base materials and coatings. The overall goal is to achieve a step-jump in the potential durability of advanced composite ceramic/metal systems in aggressive conditions through a programme of composite engineering. Thermal spraying in its current form which involves the most advanced application hardware has been in existence since the mid 1980s. Since then considerable advances have been made in processing technology (incorporating High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) processes) such that now the quality of thermal spray coatings (TSC) in terms of low porosity and oxide content is very high. There are still considerable developments required in TSC technology to achieve enhanced performance in conditions where joint mechanical and electrochemical effects pertain. My proposed research aims to shift some of the emphasis on TSC research into consideration of fundamental aspects of the ceramic/metal system which makes up the coating. This approach, involving an integrated study of fundamental electrochemical interactions at ceramic/metal interfaces, reaction kinetics at ceramics and metals and the assessment of liquid-solid erosion degradation, will enable significant progress to be made towards engineering the next generation of TSC.
