Summary on Grant Application Form
The area of this proposal is ergodic theory of hyperbolic dynamical systems and its applications to problems in hyperbolic geometry and related areas of mathematics. The principal aim is to obtain precise information about the asymptotic distribution of periodic orbits, closed geodesics and the associated generating functions in these settings. This naturally leads to a consideration of the connection between ergodic theory and the description of hyperbolic groups via finite state automata. Proposed applications also include computation of manifold invariants, studying products of negatively curved manifolds, and analysing growth series for hyperbolic groups. The proposed aims take the form of a list of specific problems.
