Directly or indirectly we all make daily use of semiconductor lasers, for example, in CD players, laser printers, scanners, and optical telecommunication. How do semiconductor laser systems work and what is all their possible behaviour? The answer to this question is still patchy because semiconductor laser systems display an astonishing wealth of complicated dynamics. They are fascinating objects of study, offering unique possibilities for investigating nonlinear phenomena and chaos both theoretically and experimentally.The proposed research will be in the area of applied mathematics, with strong connections to laser physics and optical engineering. The main goal is to develop new theory and numerical tools of general use for the study of so-called global bifurcations, which are organising the dynamics in mathematical models. Semiconductor laser systems will serve as the central area of application. Nonlinear dynamics and global bifurcations will be studied in a number of laser systems of key fundamental and technological importance. They include lasers in optical data storage and a new type of laser that is the key to the current increase in capacity of optical data networks.
