Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal combines my experience with planar microcavities and photonic band structure materials to investigate the new field of strong coupling physics in photonic band structure systems. Most of the research will be concerned with microcavities created by fabricating intentional defects in two and three dimensional photonic lattices. These structures offer the potential for extending experimental studies of cavity QED effects to the optical region of the spectrum. One of the major goals of the programme is to determine just what sorts of effects could feasibly be observed in realistic devices. The programme consists of three parts: I shall develop new computational techniques to model defects in photonic lattices, so that important parameters such as the achievable cavity finesse and modal volume can be assessed. Then, I shall investigate the linear and non-linear properties of planar, wave-guide and cavity systems containing avtive elements such as quantum wells and quantum dots. Finally, I shall look at cavity structures in the regime where cavity QED effects may be observable.Although the programme is purely theoretical, my aim is to stimulate and support experimental work in these areas within the department.
