A five year Advanced Fellowship is sought that will allow me to pursue issues involved in the effective utilisation of biological resources. This will be achieved through exploration of five research themes, each with its own focus and associated illustrative case study. Each theme will draw upon advances in the portfolio of conventional disciplines servicing this increasingly important area in terms of both economic and environmental contexts, and will draw upon the varied skills I have amassed during my career. I will specifically target my approach at the conjunction of chemical engineering, chemistry and biological sciences. This will result in a new level of understanding upon which can be based future step-changes in process effectiveness and targeted product engineering within the chemical and biochemical industries. As part of the Fellowship I intend to spend 2 months each year working at other world leading establishments, whether they be established colleagues, or new collaborative partners.A potential commercialisation route for technology derived from this research driven project, has been identified, and this is already in place. Thus direct benefits for an improvement in the quality of life are possible. The success of the proposed Fellowship will also strengthen international collaboration between Britain, Canada, The Netherlands, France, Portugal, The JSA, Japan and Thailand.
