Summary on Grant Application Form
The growth of nanotechnology has made it possible to measure physical, chemical and biological phenomena with precision and accuracy. t is now clear that nanoprobes can be used to investigate electrical properties of living tissue, and that the information gleaned can be diagnostics. However, to convert this scientific work into a mass-market technology requires the development of a scalable nanotechnology.The length scales over which electrical measurements are useful have a dynamic range of nanometres to microns.Importantly, measurements that are localised to a few nanometres often need to be repeated over distances of many microns. the proposed project will develop a hybrid silicon CMOS/probe technology. The resulting devices will enable multiple data to be collected and analysed in a single experiment. This will be the basis of a generic class of integrated diagnositcs devices that will benefit from the added valuw of system-on-a-chip technology.The research calls for a blend of integrated circuit design and nanofabrication skills. These are available to this project, in terms of the laboratory in which wirk will be done, the unique skill-set of the applicant, and the access to local resources and additional expertise.
