While more than 7000 combinations of protons and neutrons are bound with respect to the emission of their nucleon icconstituences, we have experimental information only of about less than 4000 atomic nuclei mainly stable and those from the proton rich side of the valley of stability. The incresing beam intensities of the relativistic energy heavy ions will allow the use of projectile fragmentation technique to study a number of previously unobservable nuclear systems. I propose to investigate the internal structure of currently .inaccessible very neutron rich nuclei in the A=180-230 mass region. The principal aim of these studies will be (a) the identification of nuclear shell gaps and their role in determening the nuclear shape (b) the identification and the effect of specific single particle orbitals and their relationship to the nuclear mean field. In order to achieve these aims, development in the spectroscopic techniques will be required.
