The project comprises the development and application of photocrystallography: the structural determination of molecules whilst in their photo-induced excited states. The methodology uses single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques combined with the synchronisation of a pulsed X-ray and laser source. Two methodologies will be developed: one based on a rapidly rotating chopper system for the study of photo-induced species with lifetimes of milliseconds -10 microseconds; the other will be achieved by harnessing the inherent temporal structure of a synchrotron source. Both techniques will be developed at the SRS, Daresbury, UK, and the University of Bath, UK, the latter forming a testing ground for the bulk of this work, whilst also accommodating some laboratory-based developments in this regard. Once developed, the technique will be applied to a range of photonic materials, knowledge of their excited-state structures being of particular importance on account of their intrinsic control over their associated photophysical properties. Excited state / photophysical property relationships will be established and used subsequently to synthesise and test a new series of materials that display more optimal photonic properties. Such a process has the ultimate goal of being able to structurally engineer compounds for the desired photonic application.
