Summary on Grant Application Form
This Senior Fellowship proposal aims to explore new areas in the physics of light-matter interactions in solid state systems. Attention will be focussed on advanced semiconductor structures which enable control of both photonic and electronic properties and the interaction between them. The main focus will be on fundametal advances, but ones which have strong relevance to new generations of devices in the field of optoelectonics in its widest sense. Control of light matter interactions will be achieved on structures with characteristic sizes ranging from the macroscopic (~100 microns) to the nanometre scale (~10nm). Highlights of the research are likely to include the understanding of the character of new states of matter with macroscopic coherence, the radical modification of spontaneous emission characteristics, often considered to be an intrinsic property of light emitting materials and the fabrication and study of single electron-hole pair emitters coupled to single optical modes of wavelength scale high finesse cavities, in the quantum regime for both excitons and photons.
