Summary on Grant Application Form |
The work described in this proposal is involved with the observation and manipulation of electronic and molecular dynamics of small molecules in the gas phase. It is often most intuitive to describe these fundamental motions using the familiar time-dependent language of classical mechanics. Consequently, wavepacket states, which allow the transition between quantum mechanics and classical mechanics to be made directly, are particularly important. The main focus of this proposal is on coherent control with the aim being to manipulate the dynamics of electronic and molecular wavepackets using phase-locked sequences of ultrashort laser pulses and feedback-optimised laser fields. Despite the increasing international interest in this area, there is virtually no other UK interest.
