Plasma processing of solid surfaces offers many advantages compared to conventional methods, this includes the absence of solvents, speed, cost, and the capability to coat virtually any type of solid substrate. Recently, a major advancement has emerged in this field as a result of work carried out by the applicant and also workers at the University of Texas. It has been demonstrated that high levels of functional group incorporation into growing films (approaching 100% selectivity) can be achieved by pulsing the electrical discharge on sub-ms timescales. Such scope to be able to control the overall chemical composition of a deposited film provides the means for tailoring the density of desired functional groups at a solid surface (something which is virtually impossible to achieve by conventional means). A detailed experimental study is proposed aimed at identifying the underlying mechanistic reaction pathways associated with high selectivity pulsed plasma systems. This fundamental understanding will then be used to make technologically important functionalised surfaces. These will include well-defined metal dot structures and super-repellent solid surfaces.
