X-ray total scattering (i.e. the measurement of both Bragg and diffuse scattering contributions) to high momentum transfers (Q<40A-1) is an emerging technique using modern synchrotron X-ray sources. In addition, diffraction data from samples at high pressure and temperature are steadily improving in quality. During the period of this research project I shall build on my experience with neutron total scattering and high pressure, high temperature neutron experimental methods and develop methodologies for making X-ray total scattering measurements at high temperature and high pressure. The results of these optimised, albeit challenging experiments will be used to characterise the structural disorder in important classes of materials such as network silicates, superionic conductors, glasses and materials believed to undergo high pressure amorphization (e.g. Si02, GeO2 and GeSe2). These measurements will establish a sound experimental basis for the interpretation of the behaviour of disordered systems at high temperature and high pressure.
