Summary on Grant Application Form
This research programme proposes a new approach to water supply system optimisation. The approach is based upon state enumeration (simulation based) approaches to risk/reliability calculation and genetic algorithm optimisation. A new design approach for optimising the selection of water supply system components that will enable reduction of supply failure risk will be developed. The determination of the risk of failure will not only include failures of water supply system components, but also the probabilistic nature of the demands. Multiobjective genetic algorithms will be used in a way that will enable an improved level of consideration of the risk of security of supply failures while significantly reducing the computational requirement In a way similar to the biological world, the three main mechanisms that drive evolution forward (reproduction, mutation and the Darwinian principle of survival of the fittest) and that enable life forms to adapt to a particular environment over successive generations, will be combined with the innovative way of evaluating risk/reliability.
