Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will utilise the applicants wide-ranging instrumental and technical expertise in surface science to develop novel and state of the art experimental methodologies to simulate, measure, understand and control the catalytic activity of functionalised surfaces at realistic temperatures and pressures. The success of this project will have wide-reaching implications for the laboratory study of heterogeneous catalysis. The development will comprise the following:1. The development of attenuated total internal reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy at elevated pressures (from 0.1 to 2 bar) at temperatures up to 373K.2. The addition of simultaneous, complementary probe techniques: 1 surface species identification by vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG); 2 product analysis by differentially pumped mass spectrometry.3. Studies of the catalytic activity of model substrates by careful tailoring of surface functionality and composition. The effects of doping, modification, particle size, reactant pressure and temperature will be studied to determine the degree of control which can be exerted in order to improve efficiency and selectivity in heterogeneous reaction systems.
