Summary on Grant Application Form
My long-term aim is to contribute to a theory of expertise, based on empirical study of actual, situated, expert practice in the design of complex systems such as computer hardware and software, and hence to contribute to better tools and education for designers. I aim to provide empirically-grounded theoretical knowledge in forms both relevant and accessible to practitioners. Within the tenure of the Research Fellowship, I wish to extend my research, concentrating on four themes: 1. Mental imagery and mental simulation2. Expert focus3. Constraint management4. Strategies experts use in order to deal with difficult and intractable problems.
