Summary on Grant Application Form |
Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) use brain waves to implement hands-free control of computers and other devices, providing a promising technology for people with neuromuscular impairments to communicate and control their external environment. The main technical issues in developing BCI systems include how to obtain high quality brain waves in a friendly manner, how to extract effective features from the brain waves, and how to translate these features into communication and control commands quickly and reliably. This is a new multidisciplinary challenging research area in which researchers in computer science, signal processing, neuroscience, and psychology are very interested. The Department of Medical Informatics at Graz University of Technology is one of the most prestigious centres in the world for BCI research and Prof. Gert Pfurtscheller there is a pioneer in this area. The proposed project is for the PI to work together with Prof. Pfurtscheller at Graz for 2 months, identifying open problems and investigating new methods for extracting features from EEG signals and translating them into control commands. In addition, this project will initiate the research collaboration between Graz and the newly founded BCI research group at Essex.
