Summary on Grant Application Form
Resonance states, or quasi bound rotation-vibration states which lie in the continumn, are the link between high resolution spectroscopy and chemical reactions. These states are known to cause non-statistical behaviour in chemical reactions but, except for a few simple cases, remain poorlyunderstood. In a classic experiment Carrington and co-workers. obtained a huge quantity of detailed information on resonances in the H; system. This data has defied analysis for two decades. If it could be interpreted this spectrum is very rich in information about both the underlying potential energysurface and the nuclear motion dynamics which occur on it. A full quantum mechanical study will be performed on all aspects of this problem. The aim will be to give the first complete interpretation and analysis of the H, problem. The methods developed will be applied to other key systems such as water at their dissociation limit.
