Summary on Grant Application Form |
A key topic in 21 s` century science will be complex systems, their design and the emergent properties that arise from them. There is a need for a language as a tool for discussion and debate about the commonality of Emergent Properties across widely differing disciplines. This proposal aims to leap-frog the chance process of language discovery by evolution from the language of designers. In contrast to most scientists, designers start with a requirement for the properties of a new system and achieve these through a top-down hierarchical process; a process which implies that intermediate levels of system description exist. The uniting, in October 2004, of the University of Manchester brings together a world-class multi-disciplinary team of designers. This proposal aims to form a consortium based on this team that will investigate the language used by designers. The long-term intention of this proposal is to create a language that (i) promotes research into emergent properties (ii) facilitates a higher quality of design and (iii) removes barriers to integrative work across disciplines.
