Summary on Grant Application Form
The consequences of spinal cord injury may include paralysis, loss of sensation, and loss of the ability to effectively exercise for maintenance of cardiovascular fitness. The purpose of this proposal is to produce a short video film featuring research being carried out on the engineering development of systems utilising functional electrical stimulation of paralysed muscle to restore function and to enable effective exercise (lower-limb cycling, arm-cranking systems, control of balance during quiet standing, implanted stimulation technology). This will highlight the ways in which technologies arising from new research in engineering science can help to enhance the achievements, the functional abilities, and most importantly the health of people with spinal cord injury. The film will in the first instance cover the engineering science behind the research. Secondly, we will take a personal angle on the people with spinal cord injury who are participating in the work as volunteer research subjects. The third aspect of the film will be to conduct a series of short interviews with healthcare professionals involved in spinal cord injury medicine. This will highlight the health-related benefits of the research, and the potential for the work to be transferred to clinical practice as a therapeutic intervention.
