Summary on Grant Application Form |
An electrochromic material is one where a reversible colour change takes place upon reduction (gain of electrons) or oxidation (loss of electrons), on passage of electrical current after the application of an appropriate electrode potential. Conjugated electroactive polymers are a particularly attractive class of electrochromic material, owing to their ease of colour tuning properties, fast switching times, and high contrast ratios. During the period to be funded by the EPSRC Overseas Travel Grant Dr Mortimer will carry out practical experimental research work in this field, whilst hosted in the research laboratories of Professor John R Reynolds in the Department of Chemistry, University of Florida. Dr Mortimer is skilled in the electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques to be used, and through this collaborative project he will develop new skills and experience in conducting polymers and in electrochromic device fabrication. In preparation for the proposed research, Dr Mortimer has already been successful in his application to the Dean of the Faculty of Science at Loughborough University to take a period of Study Leave (1 September- 31st December 2004), when he will be relieved of his extensive teaching and administrative duties.
