Summary on Grant Application Form |
Many biological systems consist typically of a large number of interacting dynamical components. The evolution through reproduction and mutations can be modelled at various levels of detail using methods from dynamical systems theory and statistical mechanics. We have found that a surprising similarity exists between detailed reaction kinetics models developed by Professor Kaneko and more coarse-grained statistical mechanics models developed at Imperial College London. The visit by Professor Kaneko will enable us to make progress in our understanding of the significance of this similarity. The similarity suggests that common mechanisms may be operating at the level and time scales of cells as at the level of evolution of higher organisms. The models studied by Professor Kaneko are also of interest in their own right considered as examples of dynamical systems and for the study of time series analysis.
