Summary on Grant Application Form |
One of the major challenges for telecommunications networks is to provide small business and domestic users with high bandwidth connections to telecommunications networks. This 'last mile' problem is seen as a major barrier to many future applications and services- often the core network has the required capacity but the cost of providing high-bandwidth fibre connections to the home is prohibitive.Free space optical links have the potential to provide last mile access with capacity at least two orders of magnitude above that available with conventional 'broadband' connections. The proposal seeks to develop techniques for free space optical transmisson.
