Summary on Grant Application Form
This research aims to understand and exploit a totally new synthetic approach to the isolation and characterisation of new types of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters by using 'Shrink Wrapping' organo-cations. These 'Shrink-Wrapping' cations are hypothesised to act by preventing reorganisation and aggregation of the POM building blocks to highly symmetric and well-known structures and topologies, such as those based upon the Keggin, Dawson and Lindqvist structures. Understanding these processes will lead to the design and synthesis of new POMs that substantially deviate from known prototypes. This represents an exciting prospect as the research will broaden the large number of existing research avenues for the application of POMs, as well as allowing investigations into new areas e.g. thermochromic, nanoscale and magnetic materials..
