Summary on Grant Application Form
Stochastic models of rain rate variation in time and space have traditionally been developed from the extremes of size scales. For hydrological applications, models that can reproduce daily rain accumulations with correct first and second order statistics, have been adequate. The pulse models developed for these applications have been very powerful in reproducing seasonal and year-to-year variation, and extreme events with return times of many decades. At the other end of the scale range, stochastic mono and multi-fractal models reproduce the fine scale variation within rain events caused by the motion of the atmosphere. The scales described by these models now overlaps and an opportunity exists to combine them to produce rain rate models spanning a very broad range of scales in time and space. This network grant is to support the founding of a community of people researching broad scale rain models and the industrialists with specific applications of these models. Many applications have already been identified in radio-communications, fine-scale hydrology, erosion research, pollution transport and meteorology. The network aims to support, coordinate and quantify the benefits from research in this area.
