Present day living places high demands on usage of power and therefore innovation of products that reduce energy waste contribute towards a cleaner and greener environment. Innovation in power systems is also fuelled by stringent government regulations, world-wide, on energy savings in commercial systems. Power semiconductors devices, which form an integral part of the power electronics in various systems and commercial appliances, need to be energy efficient and cost effective to make a difference.The research team at EMTERC, De Montfort University have proposed an innovative power semiconductor device technology, the Clustered IGBT, based on a new concept with performance gains that are twice that of the state-of-the-art trench IGBT. The technological advances made in IGBT are equally applicable to the CIGBT, thus making it even more competitive in performance. EMTERC have been developing CIGBT based technologies for consumer, commercial and industrial applications in the 600 V to 6.5 kV range through the EPSRC funded INTELLECT grant.The Technology Transfer is aimed at strengthening the synergy between EMTERC and established industries in the UK and oversees witha common goal of wealth creation through the introduction of new products, the CIGBT based devices, developing rapidly into the market place. The CIGBT technologies developed through INTELLECT will be evaluated for reliability, performance and cost-effectiveness under manufacturing conditions. It is aimed at working closely with industry to build and sustain a skilled workforce through development of multi-disciplinary and cross-functional skills of staff employed on the programme. It will provide UK based power semiconductor manufacturers external support through the highly skilled staff in order to sustain and deliver new products based on the CIGBT concept.
