New metals, superconductors and magnets containing organic and metal-organic moelcules will be synthesised and crystallised. In a multidisciplinary collaboration, crystal structures and physical properties such as magnetisation and electron transport will be determined with the aim of clarifying those features of the supramolecular organisation of the lattice that control the collective electronic behaviour. The object of the synthetic programme is to bring together properties not usually found in the same crystal lattice and to observe their potential synergy. Examples are: structures consisting of alternate layers having different two-dimensional Fermi surfaces; metals or superconductors containing chiral molecules; compounds with mixed electronic metallic and protonic conductivity; new ferrimagnets containing both pn and d-electron moments. The synthetic targets contain alternating layers of organic and inorganic ions. Magnetic structures will be determined by neutron diffraction including, where possible, polarisation analysis and local moment distribution by muon spin relaxation. Transport and magnetisation measurements will be made at the Royal Institution from 1.5-400K and fields up to 7T. Magnetoresistance, heat capacity and band structure studies will be carried out in collaboration with specialised groups in Oxford, Barcelona, Valencia and Tallahassee.
