Children resemble adults in many ways, but they have their own values, activities, perceptions, relationships and language. This means that they use the local environment in different ways to adults. Children generate many local car trips. There is increasing concern about allowing children out unaccompanied by adults, increasing recognition of children's rights, and the introduction in local planning of concepts such as `home zones'. The purpose of this research is to bring these concepts together systematically to explore how children use the local environment, and to see how it can be improved to meet their needs better and make it safer.Surveys will be carried out through schools in Hertfordshire to collect data on children's behaviour and perceptions. Building upon previous research experience, a sample of them will be fitted with Global Positioning Satellite equipment and three-dimensional accelerometers. The former will collect data on their locational patterns and the latter on the intensity of their activities. They will keep travel and activity diaries. From these three tools it will be possible to establish how they use the local environment. The data will be used to estmate models of children's pedestrian movement. From the models it will be possible to assess, given the socio-economic conditions of the area, how many children are able to walk safely to school or other activities, where they will walk, and how the numbers can be changed by introducing new physical designs into the environment.
