Summary on Grant Application Form |
Various types of phosphorus containing ligands have played a dominant role in homogeneous catalysis systems via their transition metal-phosphine (PR3) complexes, the nature of the metal-phosphorus bond being controlled by both electronic and steric factors. The sigma -donor properties involve phosphorus lone pair electrons and the pi-acceptor properties involve interactions between transition metal d-electrons with anti-bonding P-R orbitals. However, to date, almost all of the phosphorus containing ligands utilised involve saturated phosphorus centres, in which the phosphorus atom may be regarded as being roughly sp3 hybridised. In these types of ligands, the donor/acceptor properties are moderated by the use of electron releasing or attracting substituents, whereas steric factors are controlled by incorporating a wide variety of bulky groups. This new research proposal will focus on a wide range of newly developed unsaturated phosphorus ligands where the phosphorus centre is both sp2 hybridised and part of an aromatic ring system. In particular, di and tri-phosphaferrocenes, new phosphabenzenes, 1,3,5-triphosphabenzene and novel P containing cages will be used as ligands for Rh and Pd catalysed reactions involving (i) alkene hydrogenation and hydroformylation and (b) carbon-carbon bond formation reactions
