Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research grant will fund Professor Russell, an expert in moving mesh methods, to visit Bath (with a short visit to Reading). There will be studies of three problems. Firstly we will construct two dimensional moving mesh methods based on scaling laws and will apply these to a series of PDE problems which exhibit finite blow-up. Secondly we will make a careful comparison of the variational (GCL) methods constructed by Russell with the parabolic Monge-Ampere methods of Budd in order to establish which is better (for a range of problems) on issues of cost, mesh quality and mesh tangling. Finally we will attempt to prove some fundamentatl theorems relating to the mesh distribution for one-dimensional methods applied to scale-invariant PDEs. This should aid an understanding of smoothing methods for such problems.
