Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this feasibility study, several dielectric viscous liquids will be passed through a needle in an electric field, at a controlled flow rate under a set applied voltage. We have recently discovered that a jet can be produced from such liquids in a process fundamentally different to that of electrohydrodynamic atomization. We shall investigate the type and characteristics of jet obtained as a function of viscosity (1-60000 mPa s), flow rate(10-6 to 10-13 m3 s-1) and applied voltage (0-30kV). The jets will subsequently break down into fine droplets. In each instance we shall measure the droplet size distributions to ascertain the finest droplets that can be generated at different viscosities under different processing conditions.
