Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research programme is centered around quantum optics in media with causal response which will form the core of the project. It will be concerned with the quantisation of the electromagnetic field in materials with nonlinear response and moving media. This theory will allow to quantify decoherence processes in various nonlinear optical processes such as parametric down-conversion. This in turn has important consequences for the scaling behaviour of decoherence in quantum information processing. Another closely linked part of the project is concerned with quantum information processing using linear optics which includes investigation of scaling of success probabilities, decoherence and the development and optimisation of various special-purpose networks. The quantisation scheme will also be used to investigate decoherence and lifetime reduction of atom clouds over metallic wires in atom chip experiments. Here, the focus will be on finding miniaturisation limits as well as investigations of possibilities to include optical manipulations in atom chip experiments. Finally, it is planned to perform calculations on the Casimir force between dielectric bodies and to explore its applications in metrology.
