Summary on Grant Application Form
New materials that change colour reversibly under long wavelength UV radiation ( tenebrescence) will be developed with intended use as specialist functional markers. The aim will be to obtain a range of materials with tailored properties such as controlled colour hue and intensity and rates of bleaching. These materials will also be developed to have high chemical, thermal and photo stability and be suitable for use with printing technologies. This will involve a comprehensive synthesis programme centring on a range of materials having the required structural and compositional features of tenebresence; parallel array synthesis methods will be used to facilitate the formation and identification of the most promising materials. Various synthetic routes to tenebrescent materials will also be assessed in terms of the product qualities and also the ease of commercialisation. A full testing programme will be undertaken in terms of material suitability for security marking.
