|
The pathways and associated mechanisms for nitrogen removal in primary facultative and maturation ponds will be investigated at our pilot-scale waste stabilization pond complex at Esholt wastewater treatment works, Bradford, by (1) determining N fluxes due to algal and bacterial activities; (2) ammonia loss by surface volatilization; and (3) N deposition and accumulation in the pond sediments and N feedback from the sediments. Seasonal variations in N removal and the relative importance of N removal pathways and mechanisms will be determined by operating the ponds during all seasons of the year (total operational period: 21 months). As the role of the pond algae is crucial to good N removal, a model will be developed, based on in-pond and microcosm studies, to predict the concentration and seasonal variation of the algal biomass in UK ponds. This model will then serve as a sub-model in the development of a robust model to design UK WSP for reliable N removal.
