Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is well established that the repair of bone defects can be enhanced by control of implant chemistry. However it is now increasingly evident that this process can be further optimised by careful design of surface topography. The Department of Materials at QMUL has a proven track record in the development of jet-based technology to produce both relic architectures and surface patterning. The Cambridge Centre for Medical Materials, combining the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy and the Orthopaedic Research Unit, Department of Surgery, have expertise in the production and characterisation of nano-size hydroxyapatites and substituted hydroxyapatites for bone tissue repair. In this proposal, we combine the expertise at these two centres of excellence to produce novel forming of nanoscale topography in bioactive substrates. By understanding the influence on bone repair of nanoscale surface topography both at the cellular and molecular levels it is intended that a new generation of implant materials will be produced with optimised biological activity.
