Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this research project Is to demonstrate experimentally soft x-ray confinement and propagation within carbon nanotubes. We have shown through simulation that, when coated with various materials, carbon nanotubes can act as soft x-ray waveguides and support modes of propagation in an analogous way to fibre optics, providing the radiation enters the tube at glancing angle incidence to the axis of the tube. Electromagnetic waveguides have found extensive applications at frequencies ranging from the microwave part of the spectrum through to the visible. At even shorter wavelengths, of the order of nanometers, guided soft x-rays have potential applications in areas such as lithography and proximity microscopy. The nanotubes will be grown at Cambridge University on the surface of thin silicon and silicon nitride membranes. After coating and further fabrication stages, the feasibility of soft x-ray transmission will be made through measurements taken at the Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source to. If successful, a follow-up study will be undertaken to establish exploitation routes for the waveguides.
