The advent of the grid urges the third wave in IT after the Internet and WWW. In support of future generation of data storage in the oncoming Grid era, we propose a new concept of Grid-Oriented Storage (GOS). A GOS device incorporates all the capabilities of the earlier NAS/SAN devices, but is a new device suitable not only for Intemet/WWW communication but also for grid communication. A GOS device is a cheap file server, basically a disk drive or disk array with another board that connects it directly to the grid. The key technologies to be developed in the project will establish repositories for data that can be shared among multiple processors and multiple end users on the grid. GOS will naturally be a successor to the currently well-used NASs and/or SANs. In this project the concept will be implemented at device level with our industrial partners, Xyratex UK and Sagitta UK, whose overall contribution is over 300,000. A prototype of GOS device will be made that understands the most popular Grid languages . GOS products fit the thin-server categorization, with re-developed and simplified operating system. The test will be carried out on top of the UK e-Science Grid, the European Data Grid (EDG) and DiscoveryNet under the guidance of Prof Yike Guo at Imperial College by using useful GLOBUS middleware services to functionise a demonstrator GOS device.
