We will study simple organic liquids and molecular complexes in hydrogen-bonded liquids such as acetic acid with a combination of infrared spectroscopy (standard FTIR and ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy), Raman scattering (using ultrafast optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced Kerr-effect spectroscopy, OHD-RIKES), and a novel femtosecond Raman technique sensitive to the chirality (handedness) of vibrational modes. Using theoretical models rooted in the instantaneous normal-mode (INM) treatment of liquids, low-frequency Raman spectra will be related to the corresponding IR spectra in order to find common delocalised (collective) modes and learn about their dynamic properties. Our preliminary work on ionic liquids and proteins has suggested that there is a small set of oscillators describing ultrafast solvent nuclear dynamics in liquids. Theoretical models will be developed to understand in general terms the dielectric and/or mechanical response of liquids and to use this information to describe any type of chemical reaction in solution as well as the IR, and Raman spectra.
