Summary on Grant Application Form |
Surfaces dictate product functionality, reliability and life-cycle costs. Tthrough effective surface engineering, products can be more energy efficient, less harmful to the environment and less wasteful in the use of strategic materials. A Platform Grant will be used to underpin world-leading research in the advanced Surface Engineering field, to ensure that the UK not only leads in the understanding and optimisation of surface coating and treatment processes, but also to ensure that the UK's industrial base is able to gain maximum advantage from the effective use of the best processes available. This will be achieved by targetting plasma- and ion-based processes (vacuum, electrolyte and atmospheric) in order to produce surfaces with enhanced properties (e.g. in terms of wear, friction, thermal and chemical behaviour) The process developments will cross-cut different application sectors, and utilise strengths in several academic disciplines. Furthermore, Platform Grant funds will be used to enhance training links with research labs worldwide, and industrial companies, to ensure more effective use of surface engineering processes on manufactured products.
